Chip Repair

One of the most common questions we receive at BRi-MAC is “Is it possible to repair my windshield?” and while this is not an easy question to answer (the only way our auto glass technicians can be sure is to inspect the damage), we can give you some basic guidelines to help you determine whether or not your windshield can be repaired. In order to understand what makes a windshield repairable, we need to understand windshields.

Windshields are made up of two layers of tempered glass that sandwich a middle layer called the Lamination. The lamination is a layer of industrial strength plastic, laminating the two layers of tempered glass together. This design keeps windshields from splintering into large, dangerous glass shards when broken. In the event of a collision, the windshield will crumble into small stone sized pieces to help protect passengers from free-flying glass.
The windshield is used to assist passenger side airbags, which deploy upwards and off of the windshield interior at speeds in access of 300 km/h. This function requires the windshield to take a substantial amount of force from the interior while also possibly absorbing impact force from the exterior, making the need for strength and durability an integral part in the function of your vehicle’s safety system.
The windshield is also designed to help distribute and bear weight of the vehicle in the event of a rollover; this pivotal role a windshield plays in structural integrity helps to keep the vehicle from collapsing in on itself under its own weight.

As you can see, your windshield has a very important role in vehicle operation and safety, so repair is only an option if it does not degrade the windshield’s ability to perform that role.

Conditions when a chip cannot be repaired:

  • The chip's pit size is deeper than 1 cm
  • The damage has debris or impurities that cannot be removed by cleaning
  • The damage has penetrated through both layers of glass
  • The lamination layer has been damaged
  • The damage is on the interior side of the windshield

Our auto glass technicians will provide a free inspection of your chip and discuss if repair is an option.
